Throughout my hair care journey, I have learned a lot. Things that worked for my hair and things that didn't. After officially getting my first curly cut in 2024, really understanding the type of hair I have and the advice my stylist gave me did wonders for my hair. Changing my routine just a little and trying new products, focusing on the ingredients to help coarse hair, I finally feel like I understand my hair a lot more, and gain a sense of confidence when I am able to get my hair defined and perfect every time.

SO, here are my 5 tips to enhance your curls, which improved my routine, and help you achieve defined curls!

  1.  Shampoo TWICE

The first wash takes out all the old product and gunk that's in your hair. The second one washes your hair, where you can see the lather and scrub well. I recommend using a scalp massager to distribute the shampoo evenly to your scalp and get a nice scalp massage.

  2.  Add your product (curl cream) while still in the shower, or right out of the shower onto super-wet hair. This makes brushing much easier and improves product absorption.
  3. Sections and brushing directions MATTER

The number of small sections you divide your hair into when brushing gives you more defined hair and can give volume too, depending on the way you brush. You brush up from the roots for volume, but brush straight down from the roots for length and definition. (Check out the Instagram video to see the tutorial on how to brush)
Defining brushes made a HUGE difference. I recommend the Bounce Curl Brush.

  4. Heat protection

Super important to use before defusing, helped tame my frizz and keep curls defined. I recommend adding throughout your sections when brushing, after the gel when scrunching.
I use the Redken Low Hold Thermal Spray.

  5. The type of diffusers matter

The cheap $20 works fine, but can be uneven to distribute air or cause more frizz. Once I got this new diffuser that is high pressure and specialties for curls, the difference was huge! This combo with the heat protection spray will get you right!
I use the WavyTalk TubBlow Pro!
