Where I Am From Poem

I am from Norwalk, California
walking to el chino down the street
and grabbing a yoohoo with hot chips.

I am from a Disney-loving grandma
taking us to Disneyland every month
and watching Disney movies at night.

I am from spending the night with my cousins
Laughing so hard we cry until our parents yell
“ya callense” because it’s past midnight.

I am from going to church every Sunday
Singing in the choir with my dad and
Trying not to cry when I feel the holy spirit.
From the reminder that life isn’t granted as
My mami Theresa say “si Dios quire mija.”

I am from making tamales as a family during Christmas time,
To smelling the carne cook and coughing as the chiles are blended.
From hearing the sound of laughter all around
And my grandpa saying “pinche AJ,” con cariño, as I tell a joke.
That’s where I’m from.
